| TRANSMISSION ENDS |
[07 Dec 2005|12:39pm] |
Mood: Busy Music: Bright Eyes
Tonight: Last (official) Valentine gig of the year and the last in our series of Transmission specials. Special guests include French Art-Noise terrorists Loser Superhero (last seen at To Amy With Love in July 2004), upcoming Chorley-based teenagers Bookstore (think Sonic Youth meets the Arcade Fire) with support from highly recommended newcomers Aura 4 and The Likes.
It’s a late bar (courtesy of Retro's timely application of the new licensing laws) and we’ve also got an extra special surprise in the form of current Fall bassist Steve Trafford’s “other” band Tycoons Follies.
Oh, and I’ll be playing the usual Art-wank/Girls-Aloud/Americana/techno/nouveau grunge nonsense in between.
In other (completely unrelated news)
1) After a lengthy period of “raised eyebrow” cynicism, I’ve finally come to the conclusion that iForward Russia! (NME sponsored shouty guitar types featuring ex-Valentine Rolf Harris Impersonator Whiskas on guitar) are actually pretty damn excellent thankyou very much. The evidence for this claim is almost entirely based on a promo copy of their new single "Twelve" which I received in the post a few days ago. Nice one Whiskas. You heard it here first...
2) I bumped into Laura and Billie from Performance last night on their way to (wait for it) an A-Ha concert. Bastards. Apparently Polydor have rejected the album for a third time saying that they need "yet more singles". HOW ABOUT REDOING SOME OF THE FUCKING BRILLIANT EARLY SONGS WHICH GOT THEM NOTICED IN THE FIRST PLACE?!?!?!? Still, what do I know. I only work here.
3) This film is ace. Watched it for the third time the other night and enjoyed it even more than the first two. Utter, utter genius
4) Proof as ever that Attitude magazine is now more influential than the Times/Sun/Manchester Evening News and Smash Hits (circa 83) put together: We now have a (thinly veiled) gay pin-up running the Tory Party and another one in the TARDIS. Fucking mad I tell you. Whatever next?
5) After an even lengthier period of "raised eyebrow" cynicism, I've also come to the conclusion that Bright Eyes is actually rather good. Whimsical purchase of his dual-release "Americana" and, er "techno" albums last weekend has soothed and refreshed my stereo somewhat. Oh, and no I don't care that the boy is an absolute c**t in real life. So is Morrissey...and EVERYBODY loves Morrissey.
Er.........well, that's about it. I've got a playlist to make. Big shouts out to my farflung nearest and dearest (in particular Miss Eskimo Girl and Sir Neil Of Airdrie). Keep it together kids - the future is not only bright and orange, but it's also Matchstick shaped (apparently).
Another update to follow very soon (mostly about cross-dressing Nazis and how shit my football team is)
Hug and Kisses

Hi there, long time/no speak, pleased to meet you, bonjour, guten tag etc.
Since various people have contacted me over the last few days asking "so what's happening with Cartwheel?" - I figured it might be a nice idea to stick up a local itinerary for Valentine Records very own globe trotting/synth wielding Peters and Lee combo.
1) FRIDAY 30th SEPTEMBER (i.e. tomorrow) The vast majority of Valentine Plc (and associated girlfriends/boyfriends/hangers on) are convening at 7.30pm at Solomon Grundys in Withington - with a view to a "welcome home" drinks/curry/ make-it-up-as-we-go-along night out. This is entirely "open invite" so anyone reading this is more than welcome to join us. No exceptions: we love you all.
2) SATURDAY 1st OCTOBER Once we've sorted out hangovers and packed up the synths from Chez Valentine, the intrepid duo are heading North to SUNNY SCOTLAND - specifically Edinburgh, to play a gig alongside Babygod, Pulsar and our good friends THE ELECTROLUVS. This gig is at Caledonian Backpackers (wherever that may be) and should be a good kick off for the tour. Bravo!
3) MONDAY 3rd OCTOBER Time to hit the 13th Note in (even more sunny) Glasgow! To be perfectly honest, we're not entirely sure who else is actually playing this one - but, well.......fuck it - if you live in Scotland and are reading this. Get down and watch the Wheel. They're ace. Whatsmore, Monday is also the official re-release date for their excellent "Man: In Love With Machine" EP from last year. Now containing some very sexy bonus remixes courtesy of labelmates Lynskey and The Hi-Fi Renaissance this is an absolutely top buy if you don't already own a copy.
4) WEDNESDAY 5th OCTOBER Back to Manchester! First Transmission of the Autumn! Back to Retrobar (which Simon and I have decided to rename Bar Obvious) and some great support acts - namely Transmission favourites The Generalissimos and The Last Stand - as well as slightly-Bis-esque newcomers Car Crash TV. Oh, and I'm playing shit records inbetween (including a fuckload of new Valentine stuff NONE of you have heard).
After this there's a few days off to, er "sightsee" (which probably means getting pissed, arsing about and recording concept EPS about the intimate aspects of Mark Corrin's anatomy)
5) FRIDAY 14th OCTOBER
As promised, Valentine's got SIX fabulous new records due out in the next couple of months - namely EPS from Ultrafoetus (12"), Shmoo (7"), Penguin Map Mijinko (Single and album) and, er Joe Ladyboy (ditto). As such we thought we'd do a bit of a preview party at our new(ish) adopted home of Pleasure in Withington and have everyone play live AND DJ on a Friday night. Yay! Party! Pissed DJing! Fucking Marvellous! etc
Details:
